“And that's basically it commander,” Landrey said to the tactical team looking at him and the rest of the Umokian from behind their helmets. His voice echoed through in the cavernous chamber they gathered in making what he said sounding faraway.
The afternoon light poured into the chamber they were in. A few sunbeams came in through the broken ceiling of the castle. The whole structure looked old, left to decay, left to be forgotten. Stone kept his finger on the trigger and so did the landing party. As Landrey continued his explanation, Stone relaxed somewhat, but he still kept every one of the blue aliens in his sights.
“Somehow our memories and emotions are still intact, I feel no different now than I did yesterday or the day before.” Landrey caught Stone's expression behind the helmet. “I know what you're thinking, how can you be sure that we're not acting out of self-interest and this is not a giant plan to lure humans here and assimilate them, right?” Landrey saw Stone nod. “Well, I can only ask for your trust. Besides, you're the ones with the guns. Talk to any of us and you'll know that we're the same people you've known all this time.”
“Trust is difficult Sergeant Landrey... and it takes time,” Stone said.
“All the stinger plants that attacked us have wilted and died, so no one is going to get stung. We don't need you to help repopulate the planet sir,” Landrey's eyes were wide, desperate for his crewmates to believe him.
“And what about you? You're happy being changed this way?”
“Of course not, but until we have some other options, this is how we are. And I, for one, am fine with it. Perhaps some where along the line, when there is a way to reverse this, some of us may want that reconsider. But for now, this is who we are.”
“There's a lot to take in private,” sighed Stone. “But I suppose, for now at least, we can go along with this.”
“Sir, I have a question,” Private Nick Nelson took a step forward.
“Sure,” Stone said.
“With the stinging plants dead, how are the ten of you going to repopulate the planet?”
Landrey smiled broadly. He gestured towards Colin and Christian. “Colin is carrying.”
“Really?” Stone was started. He motioned to a medic. “Private, I hope you don't mind.”
“Nope, not at all,” Colin said moving towards the field medic who performed a scan with his onyx.
“Carrying what?” Nelson wondered out loud. And then it occurred to him “Oh my god!” he yelped and immediately regretted his outburst.
Colin tried to suppress a laugh but let out a short chuckle, as did a few others.
“How is that even possible? Who is the, I mean...” continued Nelson.
“Christian's the father. We, you know, and then this morning I just knew.”
“Still, how can you be pregnant?”
“I guess the Umorkian physiology is slightly different.”
“You had sex and now you're... that soon? What is the gestation period? Where would it, er, he or she, come out...?”
“At ease private,” said Landrey amused. “I think this jabbering thing is infectious.” He shot Harrow a look and winked.
“I honestly don't know. I think we'll find out when the time comes Nick,” Colin said.
“May I?” asked Nelson.
“Sure,” Colin stretched his belly and Nelson ran his fingers over the slits. He felt the small bumps underneath the flaps of muscles and they rolled under Nelson touch. Nelson traced the edges of the skin flaps and the slits widened and extended to Colin's sides.
“Shit, what did I do?” Nelson flinched.
“Oh don't worry,” said Colin reassuringly. “It's just that I'm really naked... and your touching is getting aroused, that's all.”
