Earth.

The blue and white sphere, lit by the sun, glowed in all its splendor just as it had for billions of years. Spinning almost carefree and virtually imperceptible on its axis, it was a serene sight from space.

“We should be able to set up a communication link soon so that the crew can speak to their loved ones.” said Commander Greg Holts, the first officer of Starlight.

“Shouldn't we turn back and find out how we can help?” Sergeant Marcus Landrey asked, his eyes wide with a shock he could hardly suppress.

Stone looked at the young Ground Command trooper and felt for him. He was barely twenty-three and being so far away from home was certainly unnerving, coupled with all that has happened and the death of his commanding officer, it was a lot to take in. Now with news that Earth was in trouble, Stone could understand the anxiety in the young trooper's voice.

“Our time will be best served finding a home,” mused Captain Hunt without looking up from the screen. “I think our mission hasn't been clearer, the fifty years we were given was obviously an estimate that now is in need of revision.”

Hunt sat back in his chair and looked at H'loor, the T'aal standing silently next to him. “What is the progress of our star mapping?”

“We've made significant headway. Using the star chart we had and calibrating it to match our widest sensor sweeps, I believe we have a working system that will allow us to navigate better than before. Also we've managed to extend our sensor range and detection capabilities.”

“Good,” said Hunt. If only they had these upgrades two weeks ago, perhaps the loss of life would have been less extensive, thought Hunt but he kept that to himself. He shrugged off the regret and stood up. “Well then, let's go and find ourselves some prime real-estate.”
